Vehicular Speed-Limit Reduction

Information and links to documents about the regulation to reduce vehicular emissions through a reduction in speed limits.

Speed-limit reductions are an enforceable control strategy under Texas’ State Implementation Plan (SIP). This page provides information and downloadable documents about this control strategy.

Background

Areas affected: Houston-Galveston-Brazoria (HGB), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW)

Start date: May 1, 2002 (DFW), May 1, 2005 (HGB)
End date: None
Applicability Period: Year-round
Source type: On-road mobile source
Emissions targeted: Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
Rule/Citation: N/A

Description: The areas affected include eight HGB counties (including Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller) and nine DFW counties (including Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall and Tarrant). This control strategy reduces speed limits on roadways in the HGB and DFW nonattainment areas by 5 mph to reduce air pollution.
