Zak Covar Appointed TCEQ Commissioner
Gov. Rick Perry Friday appointed Zak Covar to serve as TCEQ Commissioner, effective immediately. Covar served as TCEQ Executive Director since 2012.
“I want to welcome Zak to his new role as Commissioner,” said TCEQ Chairman Bryan W. Shaw, Ph.D, P.E. “Because of his leadership and his tireless service, the TCEQ continues to be regarded as one of the best environmental agencies in the country.”
“I look forward to working with Zak in his new capacity as a commissioner, and I know he will bring the same dedication and energy to this position that he demonstrated as the Executive Director,” said TCEQ Commissioner Toby Baker. “Zak is driven by the law, science, and common sense and will serve the people of Texas well.”
“I am honored and humbled by Gov. Perry’s appointment,” said Covar. “I have served a majority of my time in public service on environmental and natural resource issues and I look forward to continuing work in the area. Texas is blessed with an abundance of natural resources that need to be treasured and protected. I understand and respect that responsibility, and will work tirelessly to take care of the environment in a manner that also sustains our robust Texas economy.”
Covar joined the agency in 2007. In 2008, he joined the executive director’s staff to serve as assistant deputy executive director, deputy executive director, and in 2012, was appointed as the executive director of the agency.
Richard A. Hyde, P.E., formerly Deputy Executive Director, was appointed to serve as interim Executive Director pending actions by the Commissioners.
