The TCEQ Uranium and Technical Assessments Section (UTAS) is responsible for licensing and technical reviews in the areas of uranium recovery, by-product waste disposal, low-level radioactive waste processing and storage, naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM), and waste processing and storage. UTAS staff are assigned to evaluate scientific and engineering topics as required by the radiation control regulations and health physics topics related to operational health and safety. This is accomplished through staff expertise in environmental and operational health physics, process and civil engineering, and geology. UTAS staff also provide expertise in the evaluation of the decommissioning and reclamation of tailings impoundments at former commercial uranium mill sites (UMTRCA Title II sites) and in situ uranium recovery sites.
