Implementing an Approved Pretreatment Program: Requirements to Meet
Minimum requirements of publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) for an approved TPDES wastewater pretreatment program.
Your TPDES domestic or municipal wastewater permit or, in a few cases, industrial wastewater permit will establish whether you must develop, implement, and enforce an approved pretreatment program.
As an approved pretreatment program:
- You must develop local limits and re-evaluate them periodically.
- Categorical industrial users (CIUs) must report their discharges to you. (What is a CIU?)
- You may modify your program, but these modifications must be approved by us in advance.
- You must report to us annually.
There are many opportunities for your staff to get training about pretreatment.
In overseeing your approved program, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) will perform an audit once every five years and schedule periodic pretreatment inspections between audits.
