Mary Smith named new general counsel

Friday, Dec. 7, 2018 - Experienced attorney to advise commissioners in the new year

TCEQ Chairman Jon Niermann announced that the commission appointed Mary Smith General Counsel, effective Jan. 1, 2019. The announcement came following a closed session of the commission on Dec. 6.

Ms. Smith is a 15-year veteran of the Office of the Attorney General where she proved well versed in environmental law. She has represented and advised the TCEQ, as well as the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, General Land Office, Railroad Commission, the Texas commissioners for both the Pecos and the Canadian River Compacts, and Texas’ representative to the RESTORE Council and has served as counsel in both enforcement and defense matters. As a member of the OAG’s Environmental Protection Division, she managed staff attorneys in her role as manager for the Environmental Enforcement and Natural Resources Sections. 

Ms. Smith earned her Bachelor of Arts in History and English from the University of Kansas and her Juris Doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin.
