Coppell High School Eco Club, Coppell

TEEA 2026 Winner: Youth

The Coppell High School Eco Club delivers measurable and lasting environmental improvements through a comprehensive approach that reduces waste, restores ecosystems, and engages students in sustainable action. With more than 100 active members, the club runs year-round programs that directly reduce pollution, conserve resources, and support biodiversity on campus and in the surrounding community. The club engages members through a structured leadership model of eight student officers who manage teams, plan events, and coordinate logistics.

Through targeted recycling drives, the Eco Club diverts hard-to-recycle materials from landfills. Since the program’s launch, students have collected and recycled over 5,400 pounds of materials, including 1,091 pounds of batteries, 401 pounds of electronics, 2,572 pounds of plastics, and nearly 100 pounds of makeup products. The club also organizes monthly trash cleanups on campus and in the surrounding area. These consistent efforts have removed more than 2,050 pounds of litter since 2021.

The Coppell High School garden and orchard produce fresh food while modeling sustainable agriculture. To date, students have harvested and donated over 1,560 pounds of produce to the community, reducing reliance on store-bought food transported long distances and lowering the associated carbon emissions. Finally, the Eco Club also manages a pocket prairie and monarch garden designed to restore native species and protect pollinator populations. Deep-rooted native grasses, milkweed, and wildflowers improve water infiltration, reduce erosion, and sequester carbon more effectively than grass.
