Waste Designation Decision Matrix - Department of Transportation

This is the waste designation decision matrix provided by the Small Business and Local Government Assistance Program to aid businesses in deciding how certain wastes must be handled.

Why is the Department of Transportation (DOT) Involved?

The DOT is involved because when RCRA was passed, it authorized the EPA to regulate hazardous waste from "cradle to grave." This includes transportation of the hazardous waste over our state and federal highways. The DOT has its own rules and regulations and the EPA worked with the DOT when developing their rules for making a hazardous waste determination.
