Estimator for Locomotive Equipment and Engines

Estimate your reduction in NOx emissions to determine your Requested Grant Amount.

Instructions

For each piece of equipment you would like to replace or repower, use this estimator to determine the:

  • cost per ton of NOX emissions reduced, and
  • total reduction of NOX emissions.

This tool provides estimates based solely on the information you submit. We compute the final values.

Data You’ll Need

Look up the following information in the Technical Supplement for Locomotives:

  • engine load factor
  • family emission limit (optional)
  • hours per year the equipment or engine is used

You may also use the technical supplement to calculate emissions reductions and cost per ton.

Example for Multiple Pieces of Equipment or Engines

You are requesting $30,000, $35,000, and $45,000 to replace three 2002 diesel engines with newer, cleaner diesel equivalents. The old and new engines are rated at 75 horsepower and operate 95% of the time in an eligible county.

This will reduce the NOX emissions by 1.9041 tons per engine. Divide the total amount you requested, $110,000, by your total reduction of NOX emissions, 5.7123 tons. This results in a cost per ton of $19,256.69.

$110,000 ÷ 5.7123 tons = $19,256.69 per ton

New Engine

This area uses a different formulation of diesel fuel that we will take into account in our calculations.

Requested Grant Amount

Note: Applicants could receive less money than they request if the application does not meet the $20,000 cost per ton requirement and, for nongovernmental applicants, the 75% incremental cost limit.
