Cost per Ton Estimator for Heavy-Duty, On-Road Vehicles and Engines

For the Texas Hydrogen Infrastructure, Vehicle, and Equipment (THIVE) Program. Estimate your reduction in NOx emissions and discover how competitive your grant application might be.

Instructions

For each heavy-duty, on-road vehicle or engine you would like to replace, use this estimator to determine the:

  • cost per ton of NOx reduced, and
  • total reduction of NOx emissions.

This tool provides estimates based solely on the information you submit. We compute the final values.

To calculate these values if replacing multiple vehicles or engines, see the example below.

Should you have a replacement scenario that this estimator does not address, please email terp@tceq.texas.gov.

Example for Multiple Vehicles or Engines

You are requesting $300,000, $350,000, and $375,000 to replace three haul trucks with hydrogen fuel cell equivalents. They have 2002 diesel engines and operate 95% of the time in an eligible county.

This will reduce the NOx emissions by 3.5905 tons per engine. Divide the total amount you requested, $1,025,000, by your total reduction of NOx emissions, 10.7715 tons. This results in a cost per ton of $95,158.52.

$1,025,000 ÷ 10.7715 tons = $95,158.52 per ton

More Information on Eligibility and Cost per Ton

Refer to Section 2 of the Request for Grant Applications for eligibility criteria for engines and vehicles.

See the THIVE On-road Technical Supplement for details about how we calculate emissions reductions and cost per ton, or to complete the calculations yourself.

Enter Your Information

Your Vehicle Type

Old vehicles must be replaced with a newer vehicle of the same weight classification that is used in the same manner.

Please select "Other" if your vehicle is not in the drop-down list. Note that haul truck specifically refers to Class 8b vehicles—tractor-trailers that haul goods.

Your Old Vehicle or Engine

Unless you enter a family emissions limit for this vehicle, the estimator will use the standard emission rate, when available. Many engines do not have a family emissions limit—you will need to look it up for engines and vehicles manufactured between 2006 to 2009. See the Technical Supplement above for information about family emissions limits.

Your New Vehicle or Engine

Your Contract Length and Time in Eligible Areas

These counties use a different formulation of diesel fuel that we will take into account in our calculations.
