Grants for Alternative Fuel Government Fleets

The Governmental Alternative Fuel Fleet Grant Program (GAFF) provides funding to purchase or lease new vehicles that operate primarily on compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), hydrogen (fuel cells), or electricity—including fully electric and plug-in hybrids.

Limited funding available. This is a competitive grant based on criteria described in the Request for Grant Applications below.

How to Apply

Step 1 Determine if you are eligible

Eligible applicants

  • State agencies, counties, municipalities, school districts, junior college districts, river authorities, water or other special districts, or other political subdivisions.
  • Must operate a fleet of more than 15 motor vehicles.

Eligible projects

TCEQ will award GAFF grants on a competitive basis to purchase or lease new on-road vehicles that operate using the following alternative fuels:

  • compressed natural gas (CNG)
  • liquefied natural gas (LNG)
  • liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)
  • hydrogen (fuel cells)
  • electricity (including fully electric and plug-in hybrids)

Up to 10% of awarded funds may be granted for the purchase, lease, or installation of refueling infrastructure or equipment, or refueling services in conjunction with an eligible vehicle purchase or lease with the same alternative fuel type.

Eligible areas

Grants will be made available statewide, but priority will be given to projects in or near a nonattainment area or in an affected county. See the Request for Grant Applications for a detailed list.

Step 2 Estimate your grant amount

TCEQ has established pre-determined grant amounts for the purchase or lease of new motor vehicles. Amounts per vehicle are provided below by vehicle class:

  • Class 1 vehicles: $17,000
  • Class 2-3 vehicles: $23,000
  • Class 4-6 vehicles: $40,000
  • Class 7-8 vehicles, school buses, and transit buses: $80,000

Step 3 Collect documents and complete applicable forms

Step 4 Submit your application

Applications must be completed and submitted electronically through the TERP Online Single-Use Non-CROMERR Submission System (SUNSS).
