Waste Designation Decision Matrix - Waste Mixtures

This is the waste designation decision matrix provided by the Small Business and Local Government Assistance Program to aid businesses in deciding how certain wastes must be handled.

40 CFR 261.3 (a)(2)(iv)

Whenever a listed waste (F, K, P, and/or U) is mixed with a solid waste (non-hazardous), the entire mixture is subject to the listing, regardless of concentration.

Mixtures of a characteristic waste (codes D001, D002, D003, D004–D0043) and a solid waste (nonhazardous) are a hazardous waste if the characteristic remains.

The mixture rule does not apply to wastes that are listed solely for a characteristic.
