Higgins Wood Preserving

This former wood preserving facility in Angelina County was accepted into the TCEQ Voluntary Cleanup Program. No further Superfund environmental response actions are required.

Site Summary

From 1937 to 1973 Higgins Wood Preserving operated at this 31-acre site at 400 North Timberland in Lufkin. Operations included treating wood products with creosote and pentachlorophenol. Residual creosote constituents consisting of volatile and semi-volatile compounds along with non-aqueous phase liquid were found at the site.

Superfund Registry

The TCEQ proposed the site to the state Superfund registry in September 1990. An agreed administrative order was issued in 1992 in which potentially responsible parties  (PRPs) agreed to investigate and evaluate ways to remediate the contamination.

Remedial Investigation and Voluntary Cleanup

The PRPs conducted the remedial investigation and feasibility study from November 1992 to January 2001.  In April 2001, they applied to remediate the site under the TCEQ Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP).

Current Status

The site was accepted into the TCEQ VCP in January 2002 and was deleted from the state registry in June. No further Superfund environmental response actions are required.
