Avinger Development Company (ADCO)
This Former Wood Treatment Facility in Avinger, Cass County is in the Remedial Investigation Phase.
Site Summary
The Avinger Development Company site covers 26.5 acres on the south-side of State Highway 155, approximately 0.5 miles east of its intersection with State Highway 49 in Avinger. Wood was treated with chromated copper arsenate at the facility from 1969 to 1972.
In 1993, the TCEQ collected soil samples from a discharge pit and detected elevated levels of arsenic, copper, and chromium. Additional investigations in 1997 and 1998 detected elevated concentrations of chromium and arsenic in samples collected from surface soils, the former discharge pit, and from the sediments of a creek nearby.
Superfund Registry
In 1999, the TCEQ proposed the ADCO site for listing on the state Superfund registry. In 2001, the TCEQ accepted the site into the Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP) and deleted it from the state Superfund registry. However, in 2005, the TCEQ terminated the VCP agreement due to cleanup inactivity and proposed the site to the state Superfund registry again.
Current Status
The site is in the remedial investigation phase to determine the nature and extent of contamination at the site.
