Site Background

The Newton Wood Preserving site is located 2 miles south of Newton, Texas on Highway 87. The site is an abandoned wood treating facility that operated from 1986 to 1989. The site consisted of abandoned sawmill and wood pressure treatment equipment.

Superfund Actions Taken to Date

  • May 29, 1998, a legal notice was published in the TexasRegister (23 TexReg 5831) describing the site and proposing the site to the state Superfund Registry.
  • August 27, 1998, the PRPs for the site submitted an application to the Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP).
  • September 1, 1993, effective date of the creation of the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission from the joining of the Texas Water Commission and the Texas Air Control Board and a portion of the Texas Department of Health.
  • February 5, 1999, the site was accepted into the Voluntary Cleanup Program and assigned a project number: VCP-829.
  • March 11, 1999, a legal notice was published in the Newton County News proposing to delete the site from the state Superfund registry pursuant to 30 TAC §335.344(d) that the site has been accepted into the Voluntary Cleanup Program.
  • March 12, 1999, a legal notice was published in the Texas Register, (24 TexReg 1860) proposing to delete the site from the state Superfund registry pursuant to 30 TAC §335.344(d) that the site had been accepted into the Voluntary Cleanup Program.
  • May 7, 1999, a legal notice was published in the Texas Register, (24 TexReg 3640) officially deleting Newton Wood Preserving from the state Superfund registry. No challenges or comments were received to the determination that the site was eligible for deletion pursuant to 30 TAC §335.344(d). Cleanup of the site will continue to be monitored by the TNRCC.
  • September 1, 2002, effective date of the name change from Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC) to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
