Reminder for Public Water Systems: Immediately Notify TCEQ of Boil Water Notices and Other Precautionary Notices
April 2025—Public water systems serving residential customers must immediately notify TCEQ if there is an unplanned water outage or an unplanned condition that results in the issuance of a boil water notice, do-not-use advisory, or do-not-consume advisory. This requirement took effect on Sept. 1, 2023, and was codified in Title 30 of the Texas Administrative Code, Chapter 290.46(w).
Who Needs to Report
Public water systems that supply water to residential customers.
When to Report
You must report if there is an unplanned condition that:
- Causes a public water supply outage, and/or
- The water system issues a boil water notice, do-not-use advisory, or do-not-consume advisory.
Unplanned conditions are those where customers are not given advanced notice. Example: A water main break and the water system issues a boil water notice.
Planned conditions do not require immediate notification to TCEQ. Example: Scheduled maintenance where water service is shut off and advanced notice was provided to the affected customers.
