Brays and Sims Bayou: Developing a Watershed Protection Plan

The Houston-Galveston Area Council will develop a watershed protection plan for Brays and Sims Bayou watersheds to address water quality issues.

Background

The Brays and Sims Bayou watersheds cover over 220 square miles of densely developed area in Harris and Fort Bend counties. These watersheds and their tributaries face water quality challenges like many Houston area waterways. 
The Brays and Sims Bayou watersheds do not meet all water quality standards for primary contact recreation use due to high fecal bacteria concentrations and have concerns for dissolved oxygen and nutrients. Increasing urban development in the watershed is expected to exacerbate nonpoint source pollution and water quality issues.

Project Description

September 2024 – August 2027

The Houston-Galveston Area Council will take the lead in developing a watershed protection plan and facilitate a partnership representing all stakeholders in the project area. Activities will include:

  • Holding regular stakeholder meetings.
  • Coordinating with local partners.
  • Promoting the project via the press, direct contact, social media, and other appropriate means.
  • Conducting water quality analyses for all parameters of concern and other relevant parameters.
  • Conducting modeling analyses to estimate the amount of pollutants entering the watershed.
  • Identifying improvements needed to meet state standards.

The Houston-Galveston Area Council will also coordinate with local partners on:

  • Hosting education events.
  • Partnering on joint events.
  • Promoting related partner programs.
  • Attending local events and meetings.
