Background
Hickory Creek – in the northwestern part of the Dallas metroplex – drains to Lewisville Lake. The land use in the watershed is predominately rural with portions of suburban and urban areas. To preserve the water quality, the City of Denton and stakeholders developed a watershed protection plan for the Creek. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency accepted the plan in 2016.

September 2024 – August 2027
Texas Water Resources Institute staff will monitor the creek’s water quality to determine how effective previously installed green infrastructure has been at reducing pollutants. If it’s underperforming, project staff will create an adaptive management plan to modify those installations and improve their performance.
Staff will also:
- Work with local communities and stakeholders to promote green infrastructure.
- Develop a best management practices manual.
- Hold an educational workshop for stakeholders.
- Publish project findings in a journal.
