Renew a License

You must complete specific core training to obtain a new license or to upgrade a license.
  1. Visit Core Course Requirements to obtain the TCEQ course code.
  2. Find your training in Step 2 by entering the code into the "Course Code" filter in the table below, then click the Apply button.
  3. Select from the list of approved training providers.
Continuing Education (CE) must be obtained BEFORE your license expires.

The written portion of the BPAT exam will only be administered by a TCEQ regional office or a TCEQ approved Computer-Based Testing location. The practical skills portion of the exam is administered by the training provider.

BPAT Renewal Continuing Education (CE) Course Requirement

A minimum of 24 CE credit hours must be acquired, 8 of which must be practical skills training (hands-on). Courses listed below with an * indicate a practical skills training course (0982, 1099, 1200, 1201, 1203, 1204, 1205, 1206, 1236).

Note:

  • If taking the Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester course (Course Code 1200) for renewal CE hours, the full course must be completed (32 hours), with exclusion of the exam.
  • Self-Paced (SP) and Correspondence (CRSPD) courses may not be repeated for CE credit within the same renewal period.

Irrigation Renewal Continuing Education (CE) Course Requirement

  • Landscape Irrigator: must complete 24 CE credit hours
  • Landscape Inspector: must complete 24 CE credit hours
  • Irrigation Technician: must complete 16 CE credit hours

LPST Required Course(s) for a New License

  • LPST Corrective Action Specialist: There are no core course requirements for this license.
  • LPST Corrective Action Project Manager: There are no core course requirements for this license.

LPST Renewal Continuing Education (CE) Course Requirement

  • LPST Corrective Action Specialist: There are no core course requirements for this license.
  • LPST Corrective Action Project Manager: 20 CE credit hours with the exception for Professional Engineers (PE) or Professional Geoscientist (PG).

Note::
  • LPST Correction Action Specialist Project Manager License holders do not need to renew their license if the license was obtained based on having a current professional engineer or professional geoscientist license. These TCEQ licenses remain valid as long as the engineer or geoscience license is valid.
  • Self-Paced (SP) and Correspondence (CRSPD) courses may not be repeated for CE credit within the same renewal period.

VEE Renewal Continuing Education Course Requirement

Visible Emission Evaluator certification expires after six months; in order to maintain the certification, a Visible Emission Evaluator must subsequently pass the required field testing conducted by one of the approved providers every six months.

NOTE: All new students are required to attend the classroom lecture session before conducting a field certification. If records support previous attendance at an approved classroom lecture session then the student does not need to attend again, but may do so if a refresher is desired.

WW Renewal Continuing Education (CE) Course Requirement

Wastewater Treatment Operator A, B, C, and D: 30 CE credit hours

NOTE:
  • Class A and B wastewater operators may not take the Basic Wastewater Operation course or any courses equivalent to Basic Wastewater for renewal credit hours.
  • Self-Paced (SP) courses and Correspondence (CRSPD) may not be repeated for CE credit within the same renewal period.
  • Class D operators are not renewable for operators at any activated sludge-type treatment facility of any size, any trickling filter or RBC facility with a permitted average daily flow of 100,000 gallons per day or greater, or wastewater facility that disposes of treated effluent through a subsurface area drip dispersal system.

The Resiliency Overview course must be successfully completed and on the individual’s training record before applying for an initial Water Operator license or upgrading an existing license. The Resiliency Overview course is only required to be taken once. Repeating the Resiliency Overview course will not count for the resiliency training to renew a license but will count toward the general CEs required to renew a license.. Resiliency training is only required for water licenses, but will receive both water and wastewater credit.

  • To find all resiliency training (including meetings), search approved courses by setting the Course Code filter from "is" to "contains" and typing "Resil". Approved course names will start with (RESIL).

Water Renewal Continuing Education (CE) Training Requirements

Water Operator A, B, C, D: 30 CE credit hours must be acquired, two (2) of which must be resiliency training.

Note:

  • Class A and B water operators may not take the Basic Water Works Operation course or any courses equivalent to Basic Water for renewal credit hours.
  • Self-Paced (SP) and Correspondence (CRSPD) courses may not be repeated for CE credit within the same renewal period.
  • Class D licenses are not renewable for licensed operators:
    • at groundwater treatment systems of 250 connections or more.
    • at groundwater treatment systems serving a population of 750 or more.
    • at surface water treatment systems.
    • at groundwater systems under the influence of surface water.
    • who are supervisors, crew chiefs, or foremen of distribution systems that have over 250 connections; or
    • who operate multiple groundwater systems and the cumulative number of connections exceeds 250 or the total population served is 750 or more.
