Description
The Texas Pecos River Compact Commission represents Texas on the interstate Pecos River Commission to ensure that Texas receives its equitable share of quality water from the Pecos River and its tributaries as apportioned by the Pecos River Compact. The Compact includes the states of New Mexico and Texas.
History
The Texas Pecos River Compact Commission (PRCC) is authorized by Chapter 42 of the Texas Water Code. The Pecos River Compact was signed by representatives of Texas and New Mexico on December 3, 1948. Subsequently, the Compact was ratified by both the Texas and New Mexico legislatures and was approved by Congress and signed by the President in 1949. Thus, the Compact represents both state and federal law. The Compact allocates the waters of the Pecos River between the two states and established the interstate Pecos River Commission to administer the compact. The interstate Pecos River Commission includes one commissioner appointed by the governor from each of the signatory states and one commissioner appointed by the President.
